3rd International Film Festival ARCTIC OPEN has announced its call for submissions open

Arkhangelsk Province is going to host the Arctic Countries Film Festival ARCTIC OPEN for the third time. The FF welcomes submissions in three main nominations – Best Feature Film, Best Documentary, and Best Short Film. Filmmakers are free to submit before October 10, 2019.
As usual, ARCTIC OPEN will be followed by film marathon to show the best films on its selections to more municipalities.

As with previous ARCTIC OPEN festivals, even though the majority of its submissions come from Russia, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, USA, there are no strict geographical limitations.

The selection panel will be focused on films reflecting on national cultures, formation of personalities, and search for guidance in today’s world. One more focus is man and nature, spanning Arctic history, cultures, vulnerable Arctic environment, indigenous traditions, creativity and constructive work.

“Cinematography is what has always been reflective of the time, occurrences and challenges most worrying and consequential for the society. We therefore are looking to set up a selection which would cover the topics filmmakers in the Arctic countries are most concerned about. While our 2017 selection came to highlight women’s lot, the 2018 selection appeared to focus mostly on male psychology, motives and behavior. The 2019 selection won’t be finalized before October 10, so it might be too early to predict,” said ARCTIC OPEN Programmer Angelica Dolinina.

That the 3rd ARCTIC OPEN is soon opening its doors is thanks to the RF Presidential Grant awarded to it in the first round of the 2019 competition for the best civil society projects. ARCTIC OPEN is supported by Arkhangelsk Ministry of Culture and the Northern (Arctic) Federal University

ARCTIC OPEN will delight its viewers not only with new films but also meet-the-artist sessions which are going to feature filmmakers and figures of Russian and overseas film industry.

ARCTIC OPEN has a diverse programme. In addition to the array of cultural, entertainment, and training events including exhibitions, performances, labs and workshops, it features the Arctic Film Pitching event where amateur and professional filmmakers will be able to present their film ideas. There are lots of venues and events to choose from.

In 2018, ARCTIC OPEN received a total of 2,327 submissions from filmmakers in 110 countries. The 60 films on that year’s program were shown to more than 9,000 viewers in 10 municipalities of Arkhangelsk Region, including the participants of the International Arctic Forum “Arctic: The Territory of Dialogue” in Saint-Petersburg.
