THE ARCTIC…UNTILL CALLED FOR

UNDER THIN ICE

2019 / PREMIERE / Canada, Greenland / 88 min. / 0+ / Director Denis Blaquière

The Arctic is a majestic world. A legendary blanket of ice shelters its rich wildlife, from bowhead whales and polar bears to tiny plankton and algae. At the end of each spring, after long months of darkness, the sun shines for 24 hours a day and all living species gather at the floe edge — where ice meets open ocean — for a feeding frenzy. But global warming is melting the perennial polar ice at an alarming rate and Canadian extreme divers and cinematographers, Jill Heinerth and Mario Cyr, are concerned. In 2018, they combined their formidable skills to investigate how Arctic wildlife is adjusting to changes in their habitat. Things do not go as expected, and as they search for animals and travel over the ice, they experience first-hand the repercussions of rapid climate change. The documentary Under Thin Ice tells the story of this extraordinary expedition.Viewers will travel on ice floes with Jill and Mario to Tallurutiup Imanga, also known as Lancaster Sound in Nunavut, Canada, where they will dive with belugas and narwhals in the open Arctic Ocean. They will follow them to Greenland's Disko Bay to explore the underside of icebergs and discover the luminescent world of algae. Back to Canada in the Naujaat region, they will swim with walruses and polar bears, the supreme predators of the Arctic. Filmed in stunning 4K, Under Thin Ice brings viewers into an awe-inspiring underwater world threatened by melting ice and rapid climate change.

KIRUNA
- A BRAND NEW WORLD

2019 / Sweden / PREMIERE / 87 min/12+ / Director Greta Stocklassa

If we could build a new society from scratch, what would it look like? The polar city Kiruna has seized this opportunity. Located way above the polar circle, the Swedish mining town Kiruna was built on a great iron ore deposit, and created a significant income for the Swedish government. However, due to the mining the city has started to collapse and in order to save the industry, the city council together with the mining company LKAB have decided to move the town and its citizens 3 kilometers to the east. In this way, the town has turned a potential disaster into a great opportunity. The new Kiruna will be an even more progressive, even better society for the future. But is it even possible to plan an ideal world? On the backdrop of a moving city, the citizens of the New Kiruna are fighting their own battles. We are following the teacher Timo, a local activist against the moving, the teenage Sami girl Maja who is discovering her family roots and cultural heritage as well as Abdalrahman, a teenage boy from Yemen, who came to the town as a refugee and slowly realizes that it takes more than just a paper to become a Swede. The seemingly very different characters are facing the same questions and as the city is looking for its place. They are starting their personal search for identity, values and a greater future. The film “Kiruna - a brand new world” is a portrait of a utopian and dystopian town as well as a hard-hitting reflection of today’s society.

Koulakov’s supreme ultimate

2019 / Russia / Biographic / 87 min. / 18+ / Director Vladimir Nepevny

The main character of the film, Mikhail Koulakov, was one of the brightest persons of the Soviet non-official art of 1950-s – 1960-s. Abstractionist, Tachist, a participant of the first underground exhibitions, in the late 1950-s, he had to leave Moscow because of the criminal charge in ‘social parasitism’. In Leningrad he studied at the famous theatre director and stage decorator Nickolay Akimov, came in touch with poets and artists of the local underground. In 1976, Koulakov emigrated to Italy. There he became an honourable member of the Academy of Fine Arts of Pietro Vanucci (Accademia Belle Arti Pietro Vanucci, Perigia), taught at the Firenza University; a mosaic made by Koulakov, decorates one of the metro stations in Rome. So, cultures of two countries – Russia and Italy – intertwined in the destiny of the artist. Mikhail Koulakov died in 2015. Master of the sixth dan in Oriental martial arts, of Taijiquan (literally ‘fist of the Supreme Ultimate’ – and the very name of Koulakov originated from ‘kulak’ – fist), he worked and lived at the ultimate level, embodying the idea of freedom as an absolute value. The film is based on unique archive materials, literary texts by Mikhail Koulakov; it narrates not only about the artist, but also about a specific and less considered phenomenon of the Soviet non-official art – about total longing for freedom which have overcome the state pressure.

THE MANY
SIDES OF SARA

2019 / PREMIERE / Sweden/16+ / Director Gunilla Breski

The film tells about Sara Lidman, a Swedish writer, journalist, playwright and critic. Her articles and accounts of her 1965, 1972, 1974, 1979 and 1995 trips to Vietnam opened the Swedish people’s eyes to what Americans really did there, voicing the protest against the U.S. interference with Indo-China. In 1963 Lidman was fighting racism in Kenya and was a great supporter of miners when strikes erupted in late 1960s in the ore fields of Kiruna and in other places. Lidman later became an ardent advocate of environmental protection. Shortly before passing away Sara Lidman spoke out against the war in Iraq. The film is based on her diaries.

The small village of Palekh is a typical Russian province. Accept for one detail. Every tenth resident here is a painter. For locals the unique art of lacquer miniature used to be their bread and their fame. Times have changed.

MELODY
THROUGH THE ICE

2018 / Sweden/30 min/6+ / Director Mitra Sohrabian

Water fascinates, it gives life, it dries, it disappears, it changes from one drop to a sea, from liquid water to frost to ice. Water is one of the most crucial elements on our planet. Without water, we die but what happens when water is ice and what happens when ice turns into a music instrument? An artistic film about an artist's passion and his work. To make music instruments from ice. To become one with nature. A film about water and the art of turning it into instruments. A movie with detailed close-ups with few interviewers. Here the picture says the most. I wanted to make a film about nature, water, and this transformation through the seasons but also about an ice artist's fascination and craftsmanship. How He Carefully Works With Ice, How Water And Ice, Different Temperatures Can Help And Destroy Him. His nature can determine one's work. He creates and struggles and in the next day, nature and heat can melt his art works. My motive is to show water, from drop to sea, through all seasons, into the hands of a master who wants to create his instruments and he who does something that is most connected to nature's power. A film about nature's power, freedom and beauty. An artist who creates and uses water and ice as his material and how this enriches and limits his work. A film about Tim Linharts and his fascination with the ice and his hard creative work in creating music instruments. A film about the changes of water and the work of an artist. A film about the power of our nation in the hands of a true artist.
