Arctic Open has received 450+ submissions over three weeks

The 3rd Arctic Countries Film Festival ARCTIC OPEN announced its call for submissions in mid-July. The nominations are three – feature length films, documentaries, and shorts. The deadline is October 10, 2019.

450+ submissions have been received over the course of three weeks, indicating that Arkhangelsk’s biggest film event has aroused interest among filmmakers globally. The same period last year resulted in around 60 submissions only.

For the time being, the overwhelming majority of submissions are shorts (71%), followed by documentaries (18%) and feature length films (11%). The official selection will number around 50 films.

Submissions come from all over the globe. Apart from those received from filmmakers in the Arctic countries (Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Canada, Russia), there are films by crews based in Germany, Egypt, Nigeria, Japan, Portugal, Greece, Ukraine, Indonesia, among others.

26 submissions are Russian films – by directors based in Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Ufa, Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Chelyabinsk, and Arkhangelsk.

In 2018, submissions totaled 2,327 and originated from 110 countries.

Filmmakers are free to submit before October 10, following which the selection panel will compile a shortlist. Audiences will be shown only the best shortlisted films. This year’s ARCTIC OPEN will span five days (December 4-8) and take place in five towns (Arkhangelsk, Severodvinsk, Novodvinsk, Severoonezhsk, and Konosha). The winning films are going to be shown to audiences in other parts of Arkhangelsk Province as part of Arctic Open Film Marathon.
